Water is the very essence of life for all living creatures on this planet. It is vital for survival. It is a valuable resource from which we are soon going to run out in few decades, if we continue to take it for granted.
Water scarcity is now becoming a bigger and bigger problem – Cape Town is a perfect example. With the passing years , the no. of countries are only adding in the list of countries which have water scarcity. And India is one of them . Water scarcity is the lack of sufficient available water resources to meet the demands of water usage within a region.Talking about India, unfortunately India’s rank is 120 out 122 countries in Water Quality Index . In India, 2 lakh people die every year due to inadequate access to safe water. India is facing its worst water crisis in history said by Niti Aayog. Nearly 600 million Indians faced high to extreme water stress. Some predict that by 2030, India’s water demand will be twice the available supply. In India, 84% rural households do not have piped water access. 70% of the water is contaminated. As water availability is fix but the demand is increasing because :
(1) Growing human population
(2) Rapid growth of irrigated agriculture
(4) Poor Management
(5) Climate Change
(6) Over usage
This will also affect the GDP of country by 6% loss by 2050. There are 21 cities which include Delhi , Bangalore, etc. which will run out of ground water in some years. Bangalore had water at 400 ft . Now, it has reached 1000 ft in last 5 years which is a drastic drop down.
Abundance is not a licence for waste
Either we don’t know or we don’t care about the consequences we all are going to face in few years.By 2050 at least one in four people will live in the country where lack of fresh water will be chronic or recurrent.
Now, it’s high time to make proper management, rules and their implementation so, that smiles can be brought back on the faces of people who are going through it .We should not only depend on govt. Along with govt. we all should take a step together to solve this problem.
(1) Educate people about it and spread awareness
(2) Recycle water ♻️
(3) Advanced technology related to conserve water
(4) Improve sewage systems and agricultural methods
(5) Support clean water initiatives
